Absolutely bitter cold is gripping the Northeast and Midwest this week, the likes of which they haven't seen in at least 4 years. High temperatures are running 15 to 30 below normal from New England to the Northern Plains.
A few recent winter weather extremes:
Fulton, NY: 3-day total of 38.0 inches
Phoenix, NY: 3-day total of 36.5 inches
Lacona, NY: 3-day total of 24.8 inches
Early this morning on Mount Washington, New Hampshire, the wind chill dipped to an incredible -84°!
And then there's this crazy image from the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, PA. This band of snow was being generated by the steam that was billowing from the stacks at the Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Plant near Shippingport. They say that up to an inch of snow has fallen from this band!
